A special Branson Mother’s Day for your Mom

A special Branson Mother's Day for your Mom
A special Branson Mother\'s Day for your Mom
The Haygoods are celebrating their 26th year in Branson.

Mom will enjoy spending Mother’s Day with with her family

Mom’s just enjoy being in Branson with their families. They love Branson because it offers so much for every member of the family to do, including her. Make your Mom’s Mother’s Day extra special in Branson?

One of the things Moms  enjoy about Branson is the atmosphere and spirit fostering family.  Branson is a place for families to step away from their normal schedules and just enjoy each other without the pressure of having to be here and there or other obligations. Whether it’s a simple walk along the Branson Landing Boardwalk; seeing one of Branson’s great live shows, or enjoying one of its many attractions, A Mother’s Day Adventure gives mom the special Mother’s Day she so richly deserves

And after celebrating that special Mother’s Day in Branson or, wherever you celebrate it,  elet’s remember that special love and attention of Mother’s Day throughout the year. Make every day, like Mother’s Day, a “Happy Mother’s Day.”

A Mother’s Day Adventure

Perhaps I should title this article “An Adventure for Mother!” Instead of just taking “Mom” to brunch or dinner on Sunday, May 13, why not plan a weekend trip. One she’ll always remember. Get her out of the kitchen and out of the laundry room for more than a day. Branson is the perfect destination for that adventure!

If you want to treat Mom to brunch on Sunday, the Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch at Chateau on the Lake Resort & Spa can’t be beat. There’ll be live piano music, and a fabulous view of Table Rock Lake! Another special event is the Mother’s Day Cruise offered by Main Street Lake Cruises Landing Princess. It’s a delicious meal in the elegant dining area of the ship, while you cruise Lake Taneycomo. You’ll need reservations for both these events.

Time to sit down and enjoy a music show? Country music fans enjoy legendary tunes, along with a bit of history of the songs and artists, at Raiding the Country Vault at the Starlite Theatre. Grand Jubilee at Grand Country Music Hall offers country, rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, and pop. Grand Country has good indoor fun, too, if there’s a rainy day: indoor go-karts, mini-golf, and laser tag.

Have you seen The Haygoods? These talented young people have been entertaining in Branson for 26 years. The six brothers and their sister perform a show that’s fast-paced fun. It’s notable for its unique song list, innovative lighting effects, aerial entrances, and pyrotechnics! Another amazing show is Amazing Acrobats of Shanghai. I could break the Thesaurus button on my MacBook looking for other words to describe the incredible feats of balance, strength, and flexibility.

Five interesting questions about Branson to ponder

120605 Presleys Show Gary - Five interesting questions about Branson to ponder
120605 Presleys Show Gary 600x600 - Five interesting questions about Branson to ponder
Gary Presley a.k.a. “Herkimer” has been entertaining Branson audiences with his unique blend of comedy in “Presleys’ Country Jubilee” since 1967,

The story of how a little town, nestled amid the Ozark Mountains, became one of the most popular tourist destinations in America is well known. Not so well known however, are some of interesting underlying historical facts. Here’s five questions, the answers to which that we hope you will find interesting:

1. Could Branson be an April Fool’s joke? Well it was incorporated on April 1, 1912 and was almost destroyed before it even got started. An early morning fire on August 30, 1912 burned all but three of the city’s businesses to the ground.

2. Has “Branson’s” most popular paid attraction, has never been located within the city limits of Branson? The 1880s styled Silver Dollar City, easily its most popular paid attraction, is located on “Indian Point,” miles from Branon’s western border. Since the very early days of tourism the term “Branson” has covered entertainment and attractions outside the “city limits” of Branson. Even the first theatre on the now famous Branson Strip, the iconic “Presleys Theatre” was miles outside of the Branson city limits when it opened in May of 1967.

3. Is the city of Branson named after Ruben S. Branson? In 1882 Ruben S. Branson, who operated a general store near the mouth of Roark Creek and the White River, opened a post office in his store and named it “Branson” after himself. In 1902 the post office name was changed to “Lucia” and there was no “Branson” post office. The name was changed back to “Branson” again in 1904 after the two Township Plats, “Lucia” and “Branson,” were acquired and combined by Charles Fulbright and his “Branson Town Company” at the end of 1903. When the city of “Branson” was incorporated in 1912 did it take its name from “Ruben” or its post office?

4. Is a Guiness World Record set at every performance Presleys’ Country Jubilee? Just about everyone knows that the first theater on the now famous Branson Strip was the iconic Presleys’ Theatre. What they might not know is that two of the original cast members of Presleys’ Country Jubilee, the hilarious “Herkimer,” played by Gary Presley, and the shows smiling drummer, his younger brother, Steve Presley, have continuously performed in the show since its opening over 50 years ago.

5. Is Branson oldest continuously operating attraction is a cave? “Marble Cave,” was first opened as an attraction to visitors by William Lynch and his two young daughters, Genevieve and Miriam in 1894. It was renamed “Marvel Cave” in 1927 and in 1950 was leased to the “Herschend family,” Hugo, Mary and their two teenage sons, Jack and Peter. The Herschend family has operated the cave under lease ever since. After signing a 99-year lease, the Herschends made many improvements to the cave, but wanted something for people to do up on the surface while they were waiting to tour the cave. Hugo’s vision was to have Ozark craftsmen demonstrating their crafts. That vision, along with some insight from an old-time resident of the town that used to be located at the mouth of the cave, “Momaros,” were the seeds which were planted and nourished by the Herschend family. Those seeds blossomed into an 1880s themed town named “Silver Dollar City,” located at the entrance to the cave, which opened May 1, 1960. The rest is history!

Daniel O’Donnell, Silver Dollar City’s Old Time Christmas, Veterans Week, and the Osmonds and Lennon Sisters from the “Andy Williams Christmas Extravaganza.”

Even after living in Branson for over thirty years, the variety and quantity of all it offers is sometimes bewildering. It’s even more so when special events and touring national or international stars performing Limited Engagement Performances are factored in.

The purpose of the “Branson Spotlight” is to highlight information on select events taking place during a specific month that we believe will be of the most interest to our readers. The two sources we pick our “Spotlight” events from, are the listings of the Branson Tourism Center and the Branson Lakes Area CVB. In addition, we will “Spotlight” an “Event of the Month,” “Limited Engagement of the Month,” and “Show of the Month.”

Spotlighted Events of the Month: Normally, for each month we have just one, but for the month of November there must be two:

Branson Veterans Homecoming Week is one of the biggest Veterans Day tributes in America, and is celebrated from November 5 through November 11. It features dozens of events all keyed toward honoring those who have served our nation and sacrificed so much.

Silver Dollar City’s “Old Time Christmas” celebrates the true meaning of this special magical season amidst the glow of over 6.5 million dazzling lights including 1.5 million added just this year for its new light spectacular “Christmas in Midtown.” Proclaimed as “The Most Illuminated Park on Earth” by the Travel Channel and “One of the most sparkly, lively holiday celebrations anywhere” by Midwest Living, “you’ll take home beautiful holiday memories destined to last a lifetime!”

Spotlighted Show of the Month: A

Featured Show of the Month: Andy Williams Christmas Extravaganza continues the tradition of “Mr. Christmas” and the “Andy Williams Christmas Show” with its variety, color, and excitement and showing why “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!” Hosted by Jimmy Osmond, the vocal stars of the show, will be “The 5th Dimension,” through November 18 and the “Osmonds” and “Lennon Sisters,” from November 20 through December 16. That would be enough for most shows but, in keeping with the Andy Williams tradition of variety, there’s so much more! The amazing magic of illusionist Rick Thomas and his lovely wife Tara; “Britain’s Got Talent Sensation,” Charlie Green; Ventriloquist Steve Hewlett; the Andy Williams singers and dancers; the incomparable Moon River Band; with beautiful…gorgeous costumes and festive sets of holiday cheer. In addition, the shows from November 20 on will also feature the magical Dancing of Pasha & Aliona and the Lennon Granddaughters.

Sporlighted Limited Engagement of the Month: A favorite of Branson visitors and residents alike, the incomparable Daniel O’Donnell returns to Branson for a very limited engagement of 2:00 PM shows, running from October 30 through November 18 at the Welk Resort Theatre. Incorporating his charismatic and engaging style, he will present a blend of traditional Irish ballads, country favorites, and traditional gospel with an Irish twist that shows why he has sold millions of records and has been “a household name across Ireland and Great Britain for decades.”
